McDonald's Canada Fries Review: Canadians Do It Better

It has been a part of our mission to set the benchmark for French fries with those from McDonald’s, even recalibrating them in 2026. Obviously we did this with McDonald's in the US, it's home turf, but also have benchmarked it across multiple countries and regions (Korea, Japan, France, UK, Australia), only to realize that the chain's reputation for its fries has not been quite held up quite to our expectations. That does not dwindle the necessity to continue to review fries internationally. This week, we traveled to our neighboring nation Canada to see if adjacency to the US has much to do with the quality of the fries they offer. So far, no other country's McDonald's has been ranked higher than that from the US. So this recent installation will add to the puzzle of what has made McDonald’s fries globally famous.

Due to the chronic disappointment of McDonald's fries overseas, we have naturally come to taper our expectations. And the Canadian kiosk overtly calling it "World Famous Fries" was a first to us, which didn't ameliorate our doubts. Fortunately, we caught the tail end of the last batches of fries so we watched a fresh batch being made. If there would be any chance for McDonald's Canada, this would be it - a freshly prepared batch right out of the fryer. Here is our review of the fries from McDonald's Canada.

Since when did McDonald's call their potatoes "World Famous Fries"?

Texture (6/10)

The fries started strong offering a great crunch, which is unambiguously audible and can be felt easily. This pairs with the equally nice crisp which really does feel kosher to what McDonald’s fries have promised the world with and living up to their "world famous" reputation. Along with the exterior, the inside of the stick is almost as nice, being soft and warm but not mushy or grainy. The only blemish we could find was some parts of the innards were ever so slightly undercooked and 10 more seconds in the fryer would have perfected it. But besides that, the fries’ texture was pretty spot on and well up to par with the US benchmark we know of.

A bit bright yellow - slightly undercooked?

Flavor (6/10)

With all of the fries we have reviewed thus far, it has been stated far too many times that the fries needed seasoning or salt, or that something else was missing that made the fries fall short of what we grade as good flavor. Flavor doesn't have to be complex but must bring out the best of the potato and McDonald's US in 2026 starts to slip in this department. However, these fries in Canada stood strong and solid, with a perfect plain salt seasoning which did not overpower the slight, oily, buttery potato flavor, and but rather create a fabulous harmony. We were so happy that Canadian variants did not follow the blandness of Europeans.

Shape (6/10)

Just look at them. These fries embodied what we consider the "advertisement" caliber shape and looks. The sticks remained consistent throughout, resting in the "slightly longer than a finger” range, and holding that length through most of the fries, unlike the shards and chips seen in the 2026 American McDonald’s fries review. And while beating their American counterpart, the fries also were structurally intact and did not flop around, once again representing what we know of the classic McDonald’s fries.

Presentation (7/10)

Through each of our McDonald’s reviews, we emphasize that their paper bag packaging is simply a presentation not worthy of carrying the memory of what the golden potato sticks are meant to be. However, to our wonderful surprise, in Canada the presentation was actually in the classic carton, which allowed for the fries to stick upwards perfectly in a stereotypical McDonald’s fries fashion. Furthermore, the carton seems to have a flat and rigid bottom fold that really made it easy for us to make it stand on its own (the cartons in the US, before being switched to paper, had a bit of a round ridge). The carton also had a large amount of fries, fitting to the size shown when ordered. And yes, we recognize that maple leaf in the middle of the yellow M logo on a clean red carton.

We cannot remember the last time we had McDonald's fries in their classic red carton!

Experience (6/10)

The experience of the fries was revitalizing in McDonald’s Canada as after being disappointed overseas by each and every country we visited, we were not expecting much to be frank. The Canadian McDonald's truly felt like what McDonald’s fries actually was supposed to be, and why they have defined the symbol for fast-food fries globally. The potatoes were fried fresh in front of us, salted and inserted right before our eyes, all within a matter of minutes. Along with this, the fries delivered great value at around $4 USD.

Seems like this McDonald's Canada emphasizes cookies and baked goods. Influenced by Tim Hortons?

Conclusion

It was a joy reviewing these fries. It was genuinely the first time we were impressed with McDonald's fries outside of the United States. It somewhat made us a bit nostalgic that these Canadian fries were closer to the American McDonald’s benchmark that is seared in our memory, those golden sticks with good texture, simple salt, while being just as long and fitted into that iconic red-yellow carton. This memory was tainted by McDonald's across various countries and the at-home quality drop in 2026. But now, Canada has cemented itself as the first nation to have better McDonald's fries than that of America. Overall, we are grateful to Mcdonald's Cananda for continuing the greatness of the iconic "World Famous Fries" and beg the American brand to defend its home turf.
